Comments on the homework at Auburn, and how it relates to student’s goals and reasons for being in the Academy:

FRESHMAN SURVEY COMMENTS “YES” There is enough time for homework

1F.         I have three hours of unscheduled time every night. I do the easiest things first and cram them together. I usually do my homework within 30-45 minutes. It’s fine the way it is.

2F.         I have plenty of time to do my homework. I usually have an hour of homework a night and I have upwards of four hours to do my work. I’d expect two hours of homework a night. If you’re going to be in the Academy, you should expect a higher workload. The only reason for having too much work is if you procrastinate.

3F.         The amount of homework is just right. I complete daily homework the night before because I’m lazy. I want to learn more. I want more.

4F.         I have enough time. I can’t work in one sitting so I split the homework over days before it’s due. I have a 3.8 GPA and lots of time to participate in outside activities.  I’m in the academy for academics, not athletics. I see no correlation between the two and the fact that it was brought offends me. The problem is not the quantity of work; it is of time management and organization.

5F.         Most of the time we have enough time to do our homework, but sometimes we are not given enough time to complete it. I usually work on projects a little bit each day. Sometimes I wait too long to begin though. To get an OK grade, you don’t have to work as hard. But to get a good grade, you have to work really hard, and sometimes the work load is overwhelming.  Sometimes the homework load limits my participation in extracurricular activities.  Also, sometimes I feel as if I can’t do stuff with my family and friends because I have too much homework.

6F.         We have assignments ahead of time and we have plenty of time to do it.  I have to think about what things to do on projects. We get homework every night in Algebra – cut us a break please. It makes me feel like I’m very achievable.

7F.         I chose to commit myself to my school work, not to sports (which in my head is not going to get me into college). I do a majority of the project in the beginning so that it’s off my shoulders and I can put time in other things. I would love to be in cheerleading outside of school but there it too much homework.  The homework will eventually get me into a good college and then pre-med school.

8F.         I don’t do a lot of things so I have time to get my grades up. There is a lot of work. One day nobody assigns anything, the other everyone gives a load of work. Since it’s my first year, everything is difficult, but to be a trauma surgeon, I must do it.

9F.         I have sport to do. I need sleep on other days. The workload is too high, I don’t have time.

10F.     We get time in class to do most of our homework. I divide my work between days. World History we do only projects and we don’t learn anything. He gave us only four days to practice for the test.  Homework at Auburn is fine and it’ll help me achieve my goal of becoming a doctor.

11F.     I usually don’t do all of my homework. I start some of it, then the night before I do the majority of it. We get project after project plus daily assignments. I am in the academy because my mother makes me.

12F.     We usually have enough time for to do homework, but not a lot of time for fun or extracurricular activities. It’s not too much; it’s just usually all at once. It’s all due on the same day.

13F.      Usually we have lots of homework in one or two subjects, but the rest of the classes are usually good with homework. I really enjoy the academy. It challenges me. My only complaint is in World History. The projects are a bit too much for me.

14F.     There is a lot of homework, but it is doable. I start three days before and do the rest the night before. It would be nice to have more free time outside of school.  I think that the homework load should be lightened. I will go through the academy if it doesn’t get too tough.

15F.      I might have to stay up late but I can get my homework done the night before and during the school day it is due. I usually do set-up and prerequisites before the night before, but the actual project I do the night before. Some nights I have no homework and others I’m piled up with homework. Home work is often effective as a lesson reinforcer, but when there is no need for homework, we just don’t need it.

16F.     I set aside time in my schedule to do homework. I plan out what needs to get done in order. This is the academy, you should expect harder work. Having been in since first grade, I am used to the amount of work.  I believe most of it is worth it. There are some teachers who assign some ridiculous work at times, but it is all necessary in the long run. The sooner students and parents realize this, the sooner they will recognize the importance of it all.

17F.     I finish my homework in time. The workload is reasonable.

18F.     I manage my time so that on days I don’t have enough time to do homework; I do it before or after. I normally don’t start homework the day it’s assigned, but I allow enough time to finish.

19F.     The homework is understandable and doesn’t take long. I usually start planning for projects when it’s assigned and just do a little work each night. There is usually a good balance between my classes so that I don’t have homework in every class every night or too many tests in one day. The homework and work load in the Academy is just right for me because it is challenging so that I do learn, but not so hard, tedious or long so that I don’t want to do it. It also is easier because I’m not doing extracurricular activities this year so I have plenty of free time and my whole life isn’t work.

20F.     I separate work into segments that I work on daily.

21F.     I have all the time I need to do my homework. I think about projects when they are assigned and do a little everyday or whenever I can, but I get them done on time. I don’t think it’s too much. I can do it and it’s not like it’s not enough.

22F.     I have enough time to do homework. Some assignments I do the day they’re due because I procrastinate. Some of the assignments are pointless, but overall I’m pretty happy.

23F.     I manage my time between sports and school and church. I do assignments gradually.

24F.     I organize my time and if busy or piled with homework, I work around by canceling something or working twice as hard. The work is challenging, but that’s what you’re in it for. Homework in Auburn challenges and tests your limits which build your effort which helps you reach your goals.

25F.     I spend a short amount of time on homework and still can do sports. I do a little work until about a week before it is due and then work hard on it. I have time to do stuff and complete my homework. It is usually good except for Social Studies, where it is pointless.

26F.     I have enough time to do homework. Most of the time I start early n projects. The homework is pretty hard, and lots of it, but it’s bearable.

27F.     I try to dedicate time to everything but I try to put forth more time for homework and studying than other activities. Many academy students are in activities. More homework may be hazardous. Less homework could lead to laziness. I love the academy; the work load is about right for students our age.

28F.     I have enough time to do homework, but not enough to do what I want. I don’t load myself, I spread it out. Being in the academy it’s understandable because the students want to be challenged but it should balance with all the other things they want to do.

29F.     I seem to do my best work the night before. It all has to with how you manage your time. Being in the academy does seem hard, and is supposed to be harder than regular and I believe they feel since we are in the academy we get more work and harder work. I don’t mind it. To me it all has to do with how you manage your time.

30F.     I finish my homework and have plenty of time to do whatever. I procrastinate … usually do it the week it’s due. Workload is good and sometimes it gets to be a lot, but oh well. Fun thing to do and good teachers make for easier/less homework. As long as the teacher explains the assignment well, it should not take long.

31F.     Although my schedule is pretty hectic, I do have time to balance my schoolwork and everything else I do. Each day I do a little bit. The workload is not too high or low. I’m able to balance school and other extracurricular activities pretty well.

32F.     The assignments they give us are usually long-term. I am a procrastinator.

33F.     I make use of my time and always put homework first. I usually get a lot of research done and some organization and then put it all together the night before. I only am overwhelmed when I procrastinate on long term assignments.

34F.     If I focus, everything can get done. Our workload is not too much, enough to learn what we need. Most homework is a fair amount, only gets too much when I procrastinate on long-term assignments.

35F.     If you don’t procrastinate is it possible to do all of your homework. I do small parts once in awhile but I finish most of the project just before it’s due.  The homework is okay but my electives could have more work so I could learn more there.

36F.     Everyone is personally busy, but school is my top priority over sports or clubs. I never start a long-term project early because I want to think before I start the actual project. Sometimes the workload is too much, but I like it better than never having any challenges or homework. I think that homework and school should be put above sports or extracurricular activities. Sports are important but I put school way above them. I’m the in academy for the academic challenge and not for the extra sports.

37F.     I have plenty of time to do homework because it is all about time management. I do a little everyday, so I don’t have to pull an all-nighter. The academy to me means that it makes me think more and it challenges me, but I expect it to be harder than regular Ed. If people lower the homework load they are lowering the expectations of the students and it will be like regular Ed. The academy is challenging and if some cannot handle the challenge they do not belong in the academy program. School is more important than socializing. All people have to do it manage their time well.

38F.     I use good time-management skills. There is enough homework to learn the material but not too much so that it cannot be done. I work on projects a little bit each day. If I did not have the work ethic to do homework, then I would not be in the Academy. The purpose for being in the Academy is for the challenge and for higher knowledge at a faster pace. If one does not feel they can do so, then they do not fit the characteristics of a gifted student.

39F.     I have enough time, but don’t have much time after sports and homework to do anything else. I tend to procrastinate. The workload is about right, but the amount of time we have to do it is not enough.

40F.     I usually finish my homework on time. I feel the homework is about right; maybe a little less and if the teachers could assign on different days and not load it all on the same day. I want to do academically well that is why I am in the Academy. I feel right now the way we are going is good, but maybe a little less work.

41F.     It’s all about time management and determination. The work only gets difficult when you don’t mange your time. I like the academy, like how it challenges me but doesn’t overflow.

42F.     I get all my homework done at night and still have a couple of hours of free time. I work on projects a little day by day. I have plenty of time to do what I want. I am happy with the Academy.

43F.     I have enough time, but it eats up free time. I only have about an hour of free time each day. I guess it could be a little lighter, but it’s pretty good. OK.

44F.     I have enough time because I can manage my time. A little a day and then a final overview the last night. They could give more homework in all classes.

45F.     I have time to do my homework because I’m not that busy during the week. It’s high school and we need to practice our education.

46F.     I have enough time to work and still have free time. The workload is about right. I think you should leave regulation at the academy to those who teach it.

47F.     I do a lot on weekends and a little as I have time. It’s not that overwhelming but sometimes can be very high. World History – too high – for example: 4 days to prepare for test of comparing Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Taoism, Christianity, comparing belief systems.

48F.     I have enough time to do homework, but it takes planning and management which I don’t always do. I start projects before they’re due, but I don’t do them early. I feel I get the proper amount of homework most nights, but sometimes I feel that the workload does get excessive. I feel that I’m learning a lot of information that will be useful later on in college or in career.

49F.     I generally work 3-4 hrs. a night.  I do better the night before because I can’t focus for a long period of time. Compared to middle school there is more work so that makes it just right. I wanted to be ready for college and I feel prepared being in the Academy.

50F.     Even after sports there is enough time for homework. There may be some late nights, but that comes with the academy. Although the workload could be a little lower, there is enough time if you manage it right. Sometimes the workload seems overwhelming. Knowing that it does comes with being the academy. There is still some times where you wish there was less. It is all working to help later in life.

51F.     I usually have enough time to finish my homework, however sometimes it is hard to finish everything while doing my best. I work on projects a little each day. I believe I am challenged but not overloaded with homework. The homework at Auburn is challenging, but will be good for me in the long run when I go on to college. Hopefully, college will not be too overwhelming. I hope to be prepared.

52F.     I do have enough time to do my homework but I usually stay up late to finish all of it. I usually start thinking about the project the day it is assigned, but how much I work on it daily depends on the homework for that day. If one does not procrastinate too much, one can finish the assignments and projects. The homework at Auburn is challenging and I am in the Academy to be challenged and learn. At this point after being in the Academy for 9 years it would be so easy to do regular education.

53F.     We generally get about 3-4 hours a night and I get it done in a timely manner. I try to pace myself when doing projects. I do my daily homework when I get home. Some nights there is little homework, and some nights there is a lot; it balances out. Sometimes I feel that the homework is a lot, but when I look back, it really wasn’t.

54F.     I do have enough time for homework because I try to stay organized. I try to spend a little time on it every day. I usually have enough time, but sometimes I get overloaded with homework. I think that the long term projects should have more specific direction.

55F.     Sometimes I have time, other days I don’t. Sometimes we have too much, other times not. The daily homework assignments at Auburn have an even amount. Sometimes it’s just enough for the day.

56F.     The teachers give us a reasonable time to do our homework. I procrastinate but feel I work better under pressure. If you are in the Academy, the message that you’re sending is that you want to be challenged. If you believe that the Academy is too difficult for you then switch to regular. The Academy is for people who are gifted and want a challenge.

57F.     At times it gets stressful, but overall I believe that this large amount of homework is necessary in order for the student to practice and apply what is being taught in class.

58F.     There is mostly enough time for homework, and I usually do a certain amount each night, but some nights there is more than others. I think the workload is okay.

59F.     I try to work daily. I was expecting high school to be harder than middle school so it is okay. I don’t spend that much time on sports; I just play for fun and exercise. Academics is good, a higher priority, homework comes first, the work load is just right. I’m in the Academy so I can get a head start in college, so I’m learning and not bored.

60F.     The work load is heavy, but the teachers give us a reasonable amount of time to complete it and still eat, sleep and participate in extra-curricular activities. I plan out and use my time well, especially on large assignments. We learn without being extremely stressed from the work load. The Academy is a great way to learn about what is important. Sports are not an issue because people can be both athletically inclined and academically inclined, but it depends on how people work together. Academics come first in future life. Sports are fun, but will most likely not help people succeed in later life after they graduate.

61F.     I balance my schedule and make time to do homework each night. I work on projects a little bit at a time. We have a good amount of homework; more than regular but it’s supposed to be. Homework at Auburn isn’t just busy work but helps practicing for tests and preparing for next year and or college.

62F.     It just depends how I manage my time. I do my homework in daily increments because it is easier to do so. The homework is just the right amount because we just need to manage our time.

63F.     I have plenty of time.  I just like to procrastinate.

64F.     There is enough time whether I want to do it or not. I take it a day at a time finishing what’s most important first. It keeps me busy, but I still have free time for myself. The homework keeps my mind stimulated. Being in the Academy means a better education, better college, and better jobs. It’s setting up my future.

65F.     I finish my homework on time though I’m not motivated to start early. The workload can get too much, but normally it is fine.

66F.     I manage my time so I have enough time for homework. I don’t start immediately, but I finish projects over time and homework at home. We have enough work to do. It can get too high sometimes, when multiple teachers assign multiple projects at the same time.

67F.     I usually finish my homework before 11:00. Sometimes I stay up really late to finish projects though. I don’t really feel like it’s too much, but sometimes it does.

68F.     I find time every night to do my homework after sports. One problem, Auburn teachers assign HUGE projects. Those are a bit too much to handle. We join the academy for a challenge. That is what we are getting.

69F.     My homework is usually done around dinnertime. My daily homework is done the next day. My long-term assignments need prioritizing. I feel challenged. I went to the academy because I wanted to learn. I am learning.

70F.     There is enough time although I would like a little more time to do other things. I procrastinate projects because it helps me think. In Biology the homework sometimes has to be done from the internet. Not everyone has access to that.

71F.     I manage my time well. I work on homework a bit at a time. I have enough time to do my homework.

72F.     I manage my time and will some times not attend extracurricular activities. The workload is overload at certain times, other times it is ok.

73F.     I usually have enough time to do my homework, but there are times when things pile up. I find some of the work to be too hard. There are some assignments that I think should be given more time to turn in. Also, aside from homework, I think we need to work on vocabulary, because some things are hard to understand.

74F.     I feel that I have enough time to do my homework now because I’m no longer playing volleyball and have become more organized. I work a little each night and usually have a project done about a week in advance. Our workload is just right. I feel that the Academy homework should be hard not more of it. Though this doesn’t really relate to why I’m wanted to be in the Academy.

75F.     Teachers give us enough time. I get my thoughts and plans together when I receive the project. I feel the homework is just right, and good for me.  The “hard” homework is essential to higher learning. If you can’t handle it GET OUT.

FRESHMAN SURVEY COMMENTS “NO” Not enough time for homework

1FN.  SOMETIMES I don’t have enough time, it varies.  It also depends on the kind of homework.  If it is a HUGE project, then daily increments.  It’s high school so we should expect a lot of homework.  Sometimes it’s too much.  “Sometimes the projects are completely off the curriculum.

2FN.  Because I have other work in classes so I don’t have enough time and brain power to do the rest of it.  I just don’t have time to do it.  It’s almost right (the workload) because some days it’s a lot and some days it’s just right.

3FN.  I need more time to do my everyday homework.  When I don’t have time to do it, I do it the day it’s due, but I try to do it as soon as possible.  The workload is about right, but could have more time to do it.

4FNIt really varies by night.  Generally I start my hw at about 7 after I eat dinner and am done with all activities.  I usually think about the project for a day or two and then I begin working on parts.  I have about 2-3 hrs per night.  It’s challenging but not overpowering.  I love to be challenged and that’s what I’m here for.  I think the homework reflects that in the difficulty and length.

5FN.  I don’t have time because there is a lot of homework and I have sport/clubs/outside of school activities.  For projects, especially world history, it takes a while to find and research information I need.  There is a lot of hoework but I just need to find the time which I usually do.  The homework assigned takes a lot of work, especially projects, but once I accomplish it, I feel proud of putting all my effort into it.

6FN.  So many extracurricular activities I don’t have that much time for homework.  I start a few days after it is assigned and every couple of days work on it.  The workload is not too much, but it’s not too little.  US History is a little challenging homework wise because you need at least 2 hours to do homework.  I just need to find time in my busy schedule.  It takes a lot of effort to complete homework, but once I finish it I feel relieved that I finished.

7FN.  I wait an hour before starting and bowling is starting up, so that is going to narrow my homework time.  I have things that are going on that are usually due the next day, if I have time for the long terms, then great!  Workload is enough to keep me busy, but have time to still goof off and have a life.  Homework keeps my mind stimulated, and if I drop out now, I’m going to be bored.  It will also benefit my mind and future.]

8FN.  Sometimes I get home and then start my hw and then get so tired then go to bed and then finish it in the morning.  I’m busy and procrastinate and sometimes I don’t do it the night before.  Workload is about right because we have hw but it’s sometimes hard to balance.

9FN.  I have sport to do.  I need sleep on other days.  Workload is too high because I don’t have time.

10FN.   Some teachers give too much homework the same night.  It’s like different subjects give a lot of homework on one night.  I have to have a day or two to organize thoughts and ideas before I start on a long term project.  The workload is not too much all the time and it’s not too little.  At times it can be too high, but not a lot.  The only class I have hw problems with is algebra because it’s every night a new subject.  I think one subject should be taught at least two days and hw should be every other day.

11FN.   With football they hold us late, plus it takes me 30 minutes to get home.  So I could be home by 7 and get done by 11 because I have to eat.  So I would always go with minimum amounts of sleep.  I am getting better at not procrastinating, but when we have long projects, there is less daily homework.  If I procrastinate, I have more free time.  Academy kids are in school to learn and we have homework we do at home, regular kids can carry it in their pocket and get it done in class.  I like the amount of homework because the harder high school is, the easier college is.

12FN.   Some projects I would like to have more time to create them.  It is exhausting having to complete all that work as soon as possible.  I like being in the Academy but when I have a lot of hw my desire to be in the academy goes to a lower level.

13FN.   Not enough time because I am busy with other things.  I like to get homework done, however I do procrastinate.  There is too much work.  I am in the Academy for college purposes.

14FN.   There is too much homework, because I have a life.

15FN.   I have had mono so I sleep most of the day.   I’m a procrastinator.  I think the workload is too high because they expect us to do between 15-20 hours a week, plus elective hw.  I’m in the Academy so I can learn things I don’t know.

16FN.   Because I do so much other stuff that I’m been committed to as well, so I have to do hw on the bus alone.  I do a little everyday and then pull it all together the weekend before a long term project is due.  I think the teachers give projects and then give us other homework we have to do that takes time away from the project.  The teachers should talk about when they give bigger assignments so they’re not always at the same time as each other.

17FN.   Homework is too much, not a lot of class time, and very time consuming.  I get done as soon as possible because I know I will have lots tomorrow.  I get home, do hw, eat dinner, do hw, to bed.  World History is too much.

18FN.   Usually I am flooded with my family’s own schedule and mine which overlap a lot.  If it s like a 7day assignment I usually begin 4 days before.  There is too much homework.

19FN.   When they assign an essay they only give us a couple of days.  When a long term project is assigned, I’ll wait one day then start it and tack a break for 2 days then finish it.  There’s so much homework and you have other things to do like sports.  I want to have a 4.0, but I think I need to work harder so I can get a scholarship for college.

20FN.   I don’t have enough time to do homework because of the amount of work and the amount of time it takes me to do it.  I usually have to do my home work at the last minute because I am working on one of my other numerous assignments.  I constantly have too much work,  I have very little free time to relax.  I am always stressed about if I will get everything done in time to get a few hours of sleep.  I wanted to be in the Academy for a challenge but not for the nonstop stressing that I get now.  I have considered leaving because of this.  It seems like normal classes with a lot more homework.

21FN.   The amount of homework has overwhelmed me so much my mind literally refuses to work on the homework.  I sometimes do my homework in increments, but like I said before, sometimes I don’t work.  They are expecting us to be able to fit it into our schedules even though most of us can’t.  This is my first year in the Academy and it was difficult the first day.  The goal of entering a career in game design is literally impossible because of the inability to find a teacher for the IT / A+ class.

22FN.   There are many things that are going on in my life so by the time I get my homework done at around one in the morning, I am exhausted.  I try to work on projects and get them done before they are due, but sometimes it doesn’t work out that way.  I think that there is too much homework seeing as I never had a problem getting it done before (new to the program).  I believe that being in the Academy is very challenging.  In someways this is a good thing.  In other ways (homework), it is much too complicated.

23FN.   After school I have bball practice til 6:00, home at 6:30, rest til 7:30, eat at 8:00, play video games til 9:30, do homework til 11:00, go to sleep.  I don’t like the pressure of doing my homework at the last minute.  I would like to have less homework and more in class work (checked feels the workload is about right).  The homework is easy, we just shouldn’t have so much of it, not that I have much.

SOPHMORE SURVEY COMMENTS “YES” There is enough time for homework

1S.       If I stay on task and work diligently once I begin working on my homework I am able to

finish in general at a reasonable time. I work on long term projects on nights when it is

reasonable to do so. I’m in the Academy because I expect to be challenged and the work-

load I receive is appropriate for the program

2S.       If I like the assignment I start working in daily increments and if I don’t the night

            before.

3S.       Occasionally, I make the deliberate decision to blow off an assignment, but when

I actually do it I have plenty of time. For assignments I know I’ll have, I often do them

before they are assigned. I have plenty of time to complete my homework, but I need to

spend enough time on it that I can confidently set aside a block of time a night. My

college choice is the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. I honestly feel as though

the Academy is doing an excellent job of preparing me for the overscheduled lifestyle

I know I will be facing when I get there. I don’t believe any other program could benefit

            me more.

4S.       I do procrastinate a bit, but I definitely give myself more than enough time to finish

long term projects. The workload is fine, I hardly ever feel any amount of time

constraint that can’t be eliminated with a measure of time organization. The homework

isn’t a problem and it shouldn’t be thought of as such. Though it’s undeniably elevated,

it’s plain overreaction to lessen it. It defeats the purpose of readying us for college and

beyond and reducing that would be in direct opposition to the cause.

5S.       Yes, I have enough time to do my homework because when I get home I spend about

an hour doing homework but all other work is usually reading and/or writing which

is spread out over the course of the week. Long term assignments require thought and

planning so immediate brainstorming is necessary. The workload is the expected amount

for a class you expect to learn in. To only apply yourself in the classroom and not

outside the classroom, people tend not to learn as much (memory studies). When you

choose to be in the Academy, you are forewarned that it is an accelerated college prep

program. So, when you are in the program you cannot complain because it is a choice.

Most of the Academy students are in A.P. classes, foreign language, some arts/CAPA

courses and/or 1-3 sports a year for the school, excluding outside activities.

6S.       I manage my time and dominate life on the diamond/court. I don’t wait til the last

minute. If you don’t do something to help our GPA’s, you are worthless. There is

zero incentive to be in the Academy and furthermore why is it at Auburn, put us in

a nice school and get us weighted grades.

7S.       We don’t get an overload of homework as sometimes rumored.

8S.       I have enough time to do my homework and I also have free time with which I may do

what I choose. The amount of homework is not necessarily more, it is simply more

challenging and takes more time to do. I enjoy the Academy because I know I will be

extremely well prepared for college and the working life after.

9S.       I know how to do homework along with other things. I’m “upset” that I don’t have

            weighted grades.

10S.     I have enough time, the issue is actually doing the homework. I procrastinate. The

Academy has given me a great advantage towards college over my peers. I feel that

the Academy has provided me with the skills I need to do well in life. Contrary to some

beliefs, I have been able to maintain a GPA that is near my goal and be on the swimming

            and bowling team.

11S.     We take harder classes and we can still be ranked as high as people who take simpler

classes. We should be rewarded for the work that we do.

12S      I stay up late sometimes if I am involved in other things, but I get it done. I procrastinate

sometimes. The gifted students deserve better {descriptive words} representatives than

our school board. Reward us for working hard, give us a good school and weighted

            grades.

13S.     If you want to be involved in other things, learn to manage your time well. I

procrastinate. The workload is enough to challenge kid’s minds. I want to get a higher

education than the other schools offer. Auburn offers the best educational preparation

            for college.

14S.     I have enough time because I work on it when I am give time at school and after

or before my other activities. With long term projects, I do procrastinate but I begin

working on it before the night before. I chose this program to challenge me and it does.

It doesn’t involve more work than I expected. My reasons for being in the Academy

are because I want to be challenged. I chose to be in this program, I plan to stay all

through high school because of the way it prepares me for college. Sports add to my

school experience. Art classes were another choice along with other activities I am in.

I knew what I was getting into. The only reason that my grades may be affected were

because I don’t do my work to the fullest. This was my choice even if sports at Auburn

do suck, some are good. and I hope our sports skills are not taken into account. Some of

my sports, such as volleyball, had a bad coach. I like the Academy program and

hope/plan to stay in and keep my grades up.

15S.     I never feel I have been assigned too much homework for a night, except on rare

occasions. I try to get a jump on long term projects. I feel I am learning a lot and that the

homework is worth it. I realize the Academy is worth all the trouble.

16S.     I have plenty of time to both complete my homework and play organized sports.

17S.     Well, it’s not impossible to do it all but it is very hard. I begin long term projects the

night before; well, this would be called….procrastination. I’m very interested in a

            challenging life. Academy/CAPA rocks!

18S.     I manage my time very well. I am fine with the workload. The Academy program is

a magnificent way to learn. I wouldn’t want to receive my education any other way.

I am a very well rounded person!

19S.     I manage my time well. I do my homework in increments. I want weighted grades,

            now!

20S.     Well, there is enough time available to do my homework as long as I choose to do little

else. Also, I switched the days that I work to weekends so I have time for homework

during the week. I procrastinate. We are in the Academy, so, of course we will have a lot

of homework. If you want less, drop out; if you can’t drop out—deal with it. It’s not

forever. I no longer wish to be a part of the Academy…it is my parents’ choice to keep

me in. I am tired of doing only homework all the time and not getting good grades.

21S.     I get as much as possible done at school. We need weighted grades!

22S.     I have enough time for my homework. I don’t stress out and do it right when it is due.

I work on it every other day little by little and it works out. The homework is what sets

the Academy apart from regular. That is what I want.

23S.     Homework is my priority, then any extracurricular activities I’m involved with. It is

necessary  to begin your homework or projects as soon as they are assigned to complete

the assignment. Though the workload my seem too high for some people; at the Academy

I understand that some extreme workloads are necessary. I never reach a point where I

fell I am going to collapse due to the workload. I feel that such a high workload is

necessary to reach my goal of college preparation. I fell I’m learning a lot in the

Academy and in the future, I will be grateful for this opportunity.

24S.     I can manage my time properly. We need less, thanks for wasting our time without

weighted grades. We really need to get weighted grades back. And the gifed program

should be moved to a better school with CLEAN AND OPEN bathrooms that will

not cause us to burst our internal organs!

25S.     I am up very late every night doing homework but that is because I am easily distracted

and I procrastinate. I feel the workload is about right. I am doing all of my homework

and staying busy, I hardly ever watch TV any more and I get enough sleep because I

need it for sports. When I was not in the Academy, only the year before last, I had

straight A’s and no homework. I was bored. The only thing I ever did was sports and that

was one season a year. When I started the Academy, I was actually working and actually

learning. I am very proud of the majority of B’s that are now on my report card and I am

absolutely disgusted by the fact that others are jealous of the work that I do and say it is

too much. It only seems like it is too much because the other people are lazy. They do not

do any work and only learn a general and stereotypical idea of education. I work so hard

and do so much of the work because I love to learn, I do not like being bored with regular

education. I want to actually succeed in life. I am also on the varsity swim team and the

softball team, I am in Key Club and Speech and Debate Club and I play violin. I love all

the things that I do, but the only important thing is my education. With education I

get a real knowledge and perspective on all things. I amount of work I do is all I have to

            show for it.

26S.     Yes, I plan my time, try not to procrastinate, and there is enough time if you use it well.

The workload is about right, preparing me for college. I appreciate the workload because             I will be prepared for college unlike other graduates from other high schools. I came to

Auburn for the Academy. If I wished to be unprepared, I would have gone to Guilford.

27S.     I manage my time around my extra-curriculars. However, there are days that I don’t

have time. I have to do my homework when I have time, so my time to do my homework

can change time to time. I think the question that sparked this survey is completely

stupid. Why do you take our athletic ability more importantly that our future? We have

had a great debate over weighted grades but our “well roundedness” gets more attention?

Yes, the Academy is demanding, but if we didn’t want to do it, we would drop out. The

fact the Academy prepares us for college is why we’re still in it. We get NO recognition

in ranks and grades but we remain in this challenging program. It’s frustrating to be an

Academy student when we are questioned on our athletic ability, which seems to promote

the fact you don’t take us seriously. I have done sports since the 4th grade. Seven years

and my GPA NON-WEIGHTED IN THE ASPECT OF OUR DEMANDING
HOMEWORK LOAD, has never dropped below a 3.167. We are student athletes.

Student. Athletes. We need to be able to balance our work with extracurriculars. The

easier you try to make this, the more ill-prepared we are for real life. To be quite honest,

I could continue this argument until I am blue in the face, but will I see a result? I have

seen nothing but the questioning of the validity of the Academy and the threat of

disposing of it. I see board meetings where they discuss their attendance or the fact that

they should be provided dinner at their meetings. So, I’ll conclude with is: once, just

once, consider the student’s point of view. Stop what you’re doing and think about what

you are saying to us. We aren’t well rounded because our homework load is heavy? You

are more concerned with that then our academic success. And sure, I understand you may

be really trying to help us; a genuine gesture. If you are, you do not understand the

Academy nor its students. Try becoming more acquainted with what this program stands

for. Then make your assumptions and decisions.

28S.     I have more than enough time to do my homework, I just have to rearrange my priorities.

Our workload is moderate. In the Academy, we do have homework. We get it done. So

does every other school. We just do a higher level homework and move at a quicker pace.

As far as sports, no, we are no Boylan on the football field but our scholar athletes are

true scholars, not just athletes. One of our varsity swimmers was a National Merit Finalist

and received a 35 on her ACT and she is first chair in all district orchestra. A graduated

senior from last year was a theatre star and received a 35 on her ACT. And the Academy

students that are athletes are not solitary athletes, they play two or more sports and still

get a 3.0 gpa or higher. Some of these athletes are also involved with theatre. And to say

our theatre program is not good enough is ridiculous. One of our theatre teachers is the

designer for Guilford’s set also, so to say that he isn’t good enough is to also insult

Guilford, which seems to be a favorite of the school board. If our grades are poor, it is

our own fault. As a class, we procrastinate and we are lazy. The workload in the

Academy has absolutely nothing to do with that. We make our own priorities and our

own choices. To blame these choices on a program that is furthering our education and

preparation for college is not fair. Our program is trying to better us as students and

people, and we are just as well rounded as any other school. Do not focus on our

abysmal varsity football team, but look at the change we are making in other sports

teams. Our band is one of the best in the NIC-9 if not the best and our performing arts

            programs are the best offered.

29S.     I have enough time to complete the work, but not usually enough time to complete it to

the quality I would like. I think in the end the workload will help me have good time

management in college. But compared to West, a lot of the work seems unnecessary as it

seems like I learned more at West than in my freshman year at high school. It is also

ridiculous how kids at Guilford get recognized for the highest test scores even though

they get no homework. About 20 of the kids I know claim zero hours of work each night.

30S.     I manage my time and do homework before classes or on the bus. I try to spread out

large assignments because it makes things easier but I do daily homework first.

Homework helps you to learn and right now I have just enough time to finish my work.

I want to be in the Academy because I want to learn as much as possible to succeed later

in life. I participate in sports for fun, not for my future. The homework might be a little

much but I would rather have a little too much homework than none at all.

31S.     I have enough time to do homework if I wanted to do it. Because, instead of watching

TV, I could do homework. Because of procrastination and being too busy, I start some

long term assignments the night before.

32S.     If I use my time effectively, I have a sufficient amount of time to finish the majority

of homework assigned each night. In accordance with the level at which we are learning,

the workload is about right. I came to Auburn for the Academy. I am being challenged

and will be much better prepared for college than other students who attend any other

            school in the district.

33S.     Well, sometimes I do some homework at lunch and on the bus so I don’t have as much

to do at home. I procrastinate with big projects, its not that I don’t have time, however.

I am in the Academy at Auburn so that I can learn and improve my skills for college and

have a great future. School isn’t as much about extracurriculars as academia and college

prep. Well roundedness is great, but the focus of school should be on schooling. A solid

high school education will be better for students in the long run that the ability to

            intercept a pass.

34S.     Even though I am involved in clubs and the arts I still generally have enough time to

do my homework. I don’t start long term projects as it’s assigned but I do not

procrastinate real long. I believe that the workload at Auburn is necessary in order

to learn the curriculum and it helps me get the best education possible.

35S.     I have plenty of time if I sacrifice other things I want to do. We have enough time to

do homework if we don’t procrastinate. The Academy puts me above the beyond the

rest! (Not to mention MVP on both girls basketball and track).

36S.     I generally have enough time to do my homework. On rare occasions, it feels as though

we have way too much homework and I have no time for other things. Really, I think

the amount of homework we get is reasonable and it will prepare us well for further

            learning.

37S.     Yes, I somewhat have enough time but sometimes I either choose to sleep or write

songs and I don’t get some of my homework done. I feel like the workload is right…

I actually fell that the homework I get at Auburn is great because if it will help me

before I go to college and prepare me for the real world …that benefits me. I am

glad I am in the Academy and I am also a well rounded student. I am a pom pon, I

am in the multicultural club, Black Achievers and in the Academy.

38S.     Although we are in the gifted program, I still have plenty of time to do everything

that I want to do. If I wanted to do more sports and not have to work hard at all I

would’ve gone to Guilford. I came to Auburn because I want to succeed. The workload

at Auburn allows me plenty of time to fulfill my ambitions. I think the workload is

just right or could be higher.

39S.     The workload is about right…it’s the Academy! I’m going places.

40S.     The workload is about right but my Guilford friends never have homework which I

find unfair, but I think it hurts them.

41S.     I generally have enough time, most of the time it is just a matter of time management.

My parents placed me in the Academy, but I choose to stay because I enjoy how deep

we get into things. However, I think the teachers need to get together because

some nights we have no homework and too much another night.

42S.     I go to the Academy because at least we learn things that are challenging.

43S.     Having homework helps you be prepared for college.

44S.     The workload is just enough for me to do sports and clubs. The Academy is fine. With

sports (cross country, soccer and track) practices, games and meets, going to clubs and

study groups, volunteering for theatre productions; the Academy has helped me manage

time to become a well rounded person.

45S.     I am able to complete my homework to complete my homework by 11:00pm which

allows me time for enough sleep for the next day. We are not overloaded. I am only at

Auburn because of the Academy. I am in a college readiness program and I am ahead of

the other students who are at other schools in Rockford, including Guilford!

46S.     Yes, I do have enough time to do homework, even though I am involved in sports and

theatre productions. I make sure I use class time as effectively as possible to do

homework. When I get home I use my time wisely to finish all homework that is

due the next day and study or start on any long term projects. When we complain about

lots of homework it’s normally because we wait until the last minute to start long

term projects. This is also due to us being lazy and not planning our time wisely. The

Academy is a great program. It is preparing me for college and life very well. If I was

stuck in regular education, I would become bored and unchallenged. I have seen the work

they are doing, for my sister attends Jefferson and to me it is unchallenging and easy. She

is amazed that our sophomore class is doing the same/more challenging work then her

honors senior class. The Academy is a wonderful program. Hopefully the school district

will take these surveys seriously and try to understand the STUDENT view on this, not

only the teachers and parents. Students should be heard for we are the ones experiencing

            and enjoying the Academy.

47S.     I know how to balance my homework and outside activities. I just procrastinate, it’s not

that I don’t have enough time. Even if the workload was less, I still wouldn’t make

            it a priority.

48S.     I am not overburdened with my homework, really! In fact, I often procrastinate to heavy

extents and still manage to finish it. I appreciate the opportunity to be in the Academy.

If I had qualms with the work, I would have simply gone to a pushover school like

Guilford. Anyone who thinks there is too much work either can’t apply themselves

or have too many activities going on to balance with school.

50S.     I always have time to do my homework. I never fail to find the time to complete my

homework; that is just not an option for me. I believe that students in the Academy are

enrolled because we want to learn more. If we wanted to do less homework, we could

drop out of the Academy. Please keep the homework as it is and continue the prestige

and learning of this valuable educational program. I like it just how it is.

51S.     I think the amount of work we do matches the commitment level we know we

take on when entering. The opportunities we can take advantage of are phenomenal

and to mandate a restriction on work would limit these opportunities.

52S.     I am motivated to get my work done. The Academy is meant to challenge us. If you

take away this challenge, what would be the point of being in the Academy?

53S.     Some days I feel that I don’t have enough time, but I manage.

55S.     I have plenty of time to do my homework with a lot of extracurricular activities. The

Academy is the best thing I have done with my life. I get a better education and I get

ready for college. The workload is fair and helpful.

56S.     I have enough time to do my homework, it is just that sometimes I just do not do it

because I do not want to. Everyone can do the homework. However, we are like every

other kid and procrastinate, slack off and sometimes just don’t do our assigned work.

Look at Auburn sports program. You will see we are improving.

57S.     Although I have problems with time management, I’m usually not up late trying to

finish my homework. If there were less homework, I don’t feel like I would understand

my school work. The reason that I am in the Academy is so I will be more prepared

for college. Academics are more important to me that sports or clubs because, in the long

run, academics will get me farther in life.

58S.     The Academy is here to help us prepare for the pressure of college, so I have learned to

manage my time. I sometimes procrastinate because I am being lazy. this was what I

expected when I joined the Academy; if I don’t like it I can drop out. The homework

load is as high as it should be. Without weighted grades there is very little incentive to be

in the Academy. I am a very well rounded student; people who don’t know my friends,

classmates and I have NO right to judge me. I play 3 sports for school and 2 club sports.

            I have a 3.0 gpa.

59S.     I like the amount of homework that we get, because with less I’d get bored and cause

            mayhem…..

60S.     I do my homework from 4:00 – 7:00. I am in the Academy to have a good experience

            in education.

61S.     I spend time doing sports but I have time to complete my homework. I am not

overworked and I have extra time. I am in the Academy for the education more than

the sports even though I participate in 3 sports.

62S.     Yes, our homework takes a long time to do, but most of it is long term so if you manage

your time you can get it done. Sometimes, like towards the end of the quarter,

there are too many assignments but most of the time it is pretty controlled. Homework

requires complex thought in the Academy and it helps to prepare for college. I feel like

the homework makes me a more complex thinker and will help me do better in life.

63S.     The homework is fairly normal.

64S.     Yes, all Academy kids have PLENTY of time to do homework. We do not have very

much homework at all, it is that some students are just lazy and complain. However,

when entering sophomore year I was scared thinking that we would be overloaded.

However, the amount is good, it almost could be more. I am in the Academy because

I like being challenged and pushed to achieve my goals. I find it to be very offensive that,

as we Academy students work far beyond the level of those in the regular programs

throughout the Rockford School District, and we are not rewarded with weighted grades.

When observing the homework of the regular ed students, it infuriates all Academy

students that other students at Guilford, Boylan and other “high academic” schools are

put above Auburn’s Academy simply because of the sports program at our school is not

as successful as expected. It is known throughout the students at Auburn that our sports

programs are not up to par, however, the coaching staff is not great and that turns some

of our best athletes away from our program. I love the Academy and wish that

our students could be recognized by our academic achievements rather than the

unsuccessful sports program (school wide…not just the Academy!). I might not be a

4.0 student, but I do like my homework and go to class to further my education… So the

idea that our sports are failing due to too much homework is false. Our sophomore class

could almost receive more homework and we would be OK. Our academics are not

interfering with our sports. However, the ridiculous amount of practice time required by

coaches HAS affected academics. All of our students would appreciate if our program

was actually observed to understand what we really feel about the program. We, as

students, obviously have completely different opinions and goals for ourselves. When

entering the Academy, and school in general, sports are said to be extracurricular, and

the school board is giving the impression that sports are more important or at least

co-curricular to academics. Students in the Academy and most parents strongly disagree.

Not only should Academy students be given credit for all the time and effort put into

academics as well as sports, but we should have weighted grades. Yes, our sports

program at Auburn is horrible for the most part; however, if our work was compared to

the “oh so heavenly” Guilford or Boylan, it would be ridiculously different both in level

and skill required. No, we do not get too much homework! Yes, we deserve MUCH

credit for our effort and time commitments. As Academy students, we deserve weighted

grades for AT LEAST AP classes. However, it would be appreciated if we could

receive weighted grades for Academy classes also.

SOPHMORE SURVEY COMMENTS “NO” Not enough time for homework

1SN.  Academy kids have too much homework.  If we had more time to do it I think it’ll help everyone.  Teachers give us too much homework because we only have 6 classes.  I think because of that they think we don’t have a lot of homework.

2SN   Entirely too much time spent on Academy homework.  I do it little by little so I ca manage.  Auburn Knights are more well-rounded.  Guilford’s honor classes suck.  Guilford’s top golfer got a 13 on the ACT.  How’s that for well rounded?

3SN   We get large amounts of homework from each class, but I have dance every night, chores to do at home, and other responsibilities.  I usually do long term projects over the weekends.  Even though I am learning far more than I would at any other school, I’m spreading myself in more directions than 5 hours of homework a night.  The Academy truly is beneficial and I fell I have learned more in my year here than my whole junior high career at Rockford Christian School.  However, it becomes hard to keep an acceptable GPA when I have so much homework and so little time. I have to leave my dance practices early, and leave household chores to my mother, which I hate doing.  Having a social like is out of the question if you plan on doing homework.  It’s discouraging however, when I try so hard to get good grades, but fail due to lack of time.  This should be taken into consideration.

4SN   Not enough time because we get homework in every core class and we have other stuff to do.

5SN   I stay awake until 11 PM almost every day even if I spend my day on homework and no TV.  We get more homework than every other school.  I guess, in a way, the homework is not bad.  It’s just that sometimes we get too much.  There is too much stress compared to other schools.

6SN   If I want to excel in other things, I can’t finish my homework.  I procrastinate.  There could be more learning and less homework.  Auburn makes me not play my saxophone and hang out with my friends.

7SN   No comments

8SN   The homework is ridiculously hard and challenging.  I end up doing homework the night before because it sometimes slips my mind.  My backpack is so heavy from all the homework.

9SN   I get my homework done, but not to the standard I would like.  My lowest grades are homework grades because I am stretched for time.  I get things done as soon as possible but other commitments force me to spread things out.  All my friends from Guilford have almost no homework everyday which is unfair.  Homework is necessary but the huge abundance of homework stresses me for time and I have very little opportunities to relax or have fun.

10SN    Hard to get all the homework finished.  Usually work on some incrementally, some the night before.  Too much homework!

11SN    There’s not too much homework, it’s just too hard.  I try hard to finish, it’s just too much work.  I am angry as heck people with useless classes should not have a higher GPA.

12SN    I have trampoline practices almost each day for 2 hours, making me sacrifice homework time causing me to rush to get things done.  It wouldn’t be that hard for teachers to assign even more homework so I feel they give an alright amount.
JUNIOR SURVEY COMMENTS “YES” Enough time for homework

1J

#9   Even though I am involved in other activities, I still have time for homework.

#12 I feel the more homework we get the better it will be. If we are interested in a certain subject, homework helps us to better understand that class.

2J

#9   I play basketball, am in gymnastics and participate in my church youth group and still have time for homework without losing sleep.

#11 Sometimes I have extra time to kill and I wish I did have homework.

#12 The Academy is designed to challenge us and I believe if you can’t handle the workload or you don’t organize your time well – you don’t belong in the program.

3J

#11 Academy is insane.

#12 The homework is constant, barely leaving room for any time break.  I’ve been in the Academy too long to quit, so I have to finish now.

4J

#9   I am not involved in much outside of school so I find a lot of time for homework if I manage my time well.

#11 I don’t have too much work now but if I get involved in a musical later it might seem like too much.

#12 I think the large workload at the Academy is worthwhile even though it can be stressful. I have heard that being in the Academy makes college less stressful.

5J

#11 Homework is not overwhelming but it is close.

#12 Homework helps me learn but I do most of it at school the day it is due.

6J

#9   I do have time for homework but other than that and a service project – I have no life.

#11 For the level of courses I’m taking the homework level is about right but when all the classes assign things at the same time it is too high.

#12 The homework I get is essential to knowledge in the upper level classes.  I see my “job” as a teenager to excel in school – the Academy is like working at a fortune 500 company.

7J

#9   I do have time for homework but I do have to go to bed very late.

#12 I am grateful to have homework because it pushes me to do more.  This is what makes the Academy the Academy.

8J

#9   It is ridiculous to say I don’t have enough time for homework.  When I get home I do nothing at all for about 6 hours every night and I still do all my homework.

#11 I learn a lot and am not overburdened.

#12 I love the Academy but we should have weighted grades.

9J

#9   When I sit down and apply myself and manage my time I have plenty of time for homework.

#12 We work hard but we should have weighted grades.

10J

#9   We have sufficient tome to do our homework as long as we manage our time well.

#11 The homework we have is keeping me busy but not overloaded.

#12 The homework is always challenging and testing my ability to manage my time.  We should have weighted grades for AP classes.

11J

#9   I think we have enough time for homework but a lot of people put it off until the last minute so it feels like more than it is.

#11 As of now I don’t think we have excessive amounts.

#12 The Academy allows for advanced learning.  I have come to the realization that homework comes with that. While I am not fond of homework I feel as long as it serves a good purpose I am fine.

12J

#9   I can start my homework when I get home and be done by the time all my shows come on.

#10 I honestly am lazy but not overwhelmed.

#11 There is enough to make me feel like I am doing something but not too much to overwhelm me.

#12 Please leave the Academy alone.

13J

#9   If time is managed correctly, you should have enough time for homework.

#10 I procrastinate.

#11 I don’t mind the workload.

#12 Homework is homework and you do it.  The Academy gives it out as required.  I see no problems.

14J

#9   I use my time wisely and get my work done in class so I have less homework.

#12 I chose to be in the Academy to be challenged and do more than others.  I am satisfied with it all.

15J

#9   I usually get home around 5, which leaves me plenty of time for homework.

#11 I have enough work to make the Academy experience worthwhile.  I can still participate in theater, youth group and work and have time to be a normal teen.

16J

#9   Homework comes before any fun activities.  I have time to finish work (at the risk of losing sleep) but do not always have time to relax.

#11 Sometimes I am completely overwhelmed but I can handle most nights.  The difficulty arises when big projects are assigned in more than one class and are all due the same time.

#12 I am in the Academy to be challenged.  It is not necessarily the homework that keeps me busy.  I am involved in so much – everything keeps me busy.  Homework makes me feel like I am learning even though I dislike it.

17J

#9   I feel I have enough time to do homework – this does not mean I choose to do it all the time.

#11 The work is tough and the teachers expect us to do it and be more mature but they are also lenient when needed regarding assignments.  I will be proud of all I have done and learned this year.  I know I will be a better student.

#12 I don’t expect to pass with flying colors but I work hard and try to do my best.  I do not feel there is too much homework.  I feel that student are overwhelmed because we are still learning to manage our time wisely.    I feel that if we struggle in the Academy now – we will be better prepared when we get to college.

18J

#10 I am a procrastinator.

#11 Sometimes there is a lot of homework but it is almost always beneficial.  I would rather work hard and learn.

#12 We rarely have busy work.  I may as well be working hard and learning a lot.  The teachers are good about giving extensions when needed and finding time to help us before and after school if needed.

19J

#9   The assignments are spaced out so unless you procrastinate you can get your work done.

#11 The workload is higher for the Academy because we are getting a better education.

#12 The amount of homework we get coincides with the education we are receiving. Academy students want a better education than regular education can provide, so they need to work harder than regular education students.

20J

#9   I answered yes because I have enough time to do my homework.

#11 The homework load is OK.

#12 I am in the Academy to get a good education. Homework does not stop me from doing anything else…including sports. We know what this survey is about.

21J

#9   I sometimes get done with time to spare.

#10 Sometimes I procrastinate.

#11 It’s fine the way it is.

#12 It prepares students for college.

22J

#9   I have time, but I tend to put work off so its not always my best work that I turn in.

#10 Depends on the class.

#11 Any more homework and I would be struggling, any less and I would be too bored.

#12 My issue is not with homework, it is with the AP classes not being weighted. Homework prepares us for the real world and should not be monitored.

23J

#9   I manage my time so don’t have too much homework at one time.

#11 There is enough homework so you understand topics, but it is not an overburden.

24J

#9   I afford myself enough time to complete homework.

#12 I know that the work load in the Academy is preparing my for future success and that the stress now is preparing me for future success. The Academy works for me.

25J

#9   Most of the time, but once in a while, I do get overloaded with homework.

#11 The homework is about right, but sometimes I get too busy and stressed.

#12 I love the challenge of the Academy. At times is seems that all of our classes have assignments due at the same time.

26J

#9   I manage my time well.

#11 Usually, the homework is manageable, but sometimes it is a bit too much.

#12 I know that the Academy will better prepare me for college. The homework is not interfering with anything I decide to do outside of school.

27J

#9   All that I have to do is manage my time correctly.

#11 There is enough to be challenged, but not so much that it can’t be accomplished.

#12 The Academy is to challenge the students and prepare them for college; if it was any less, it would not be the program that it is now.

28J

#9   I have enough time to do my homework because I don’t have a job or participate in sports.

#12 I would like for the homework load to be less so that I could get a job or do other things.

29J

#9   I procrastinate too much.

#11 There is a lot of homework, but not too much if students manage their time more efficiently.

#12 The workload is large, but that is expected in the Academy.

30J

#11 I can still do all the things I want to do. It’s only a lot of work if I don’t plan my time.

31J

#9   I still have a decent amount of free time, even with heavy homework nights.

#12 Homework defines the dedication of students to be high achievers and hard workers. If you can’t handle it, get out.

32J

#9   Although I spend a lot of time with sports, I am still able to manage my time and complete my homework.

#10 I procrastinate a lot, and part of it is due to laziness.

#11 The homework we get does not interfere with my extracurricular activities, but is still enough to help me at school.

#12 I am in the Academy because I want to do well in my studies and want to prepare for college. Sports won’t help me prepare for college as much as academics.

33J

#9   I’ve learned to get the work done, even during a tech week (for theatre), and I always keep my grades up.

#11 It is Academy. It’s college level work. This is the way it’s going to be in college. I have to learn to manage my time know if I want to do shows in college too.

#12 I could drop Academy and get a 4.0 and have no homework, but I would be miserable. I am in the Academy because I love the classes. If that means high workloads, I am willing to do that. I don’t want them to slow down the classes; I want to learn.

34J

#9   Proper and responsible time management is all someone needs to successfully complete their homework each and every night.

#10 The only reason I have “all-nighters” is because I procrastinate.

#11 I trust the teachers to use their own best judgment to determine the amount of homework necessary to learn the required material.

#12 Don’t mess with the Academy’s curriculum. It turns out successful students year after year who are involved in extracurricular activities. It is meant to be rigorous and challenging. If you don’t want to handle the workload, you are more than welcome to leave. Don’t limit what the Academy can do.

35J

#9   I have plenty of time to finish my homework and study. My sports do not take up my entire evening.

#11 The workload is a bit difficult, but it really helps me learn and I would not grasp the material as well without it.

#12 It is never a question for me of not having enough time for my homework. It is simply a question of whether or not I want to do my homework. Sometimes I waste valuable time and procrastinate. My academic achievement means more to me than my athletic achievement.

36J

#11 Sometimes the workload is too much, but only if it’s put off until the last minute. There should be more time allowed on labs.

#12 The Academy prides itself on being tough. The extracurricular activities get in the way of schoolwork, not the other way around.

37J

#9   I arrange my schedule in order to complete my homework. I never get busywork.

#11 The workload is justified and beneficial because it helps me learn and understand the material. We are never assigned something that can’t be completed.

#12 Being in the Academy means going above the “good enough” standard. Teachers can only do so much in class, so it becomes necessary to do additional work outside of school. I could have little homework and ace all of my classes, but when I go to college I would be inadequately prepared. The Academy does its best to prepare students for the coming challenges. Often times, this means a considerable amount of homework. I would rather stress myself out sometimes and do well in life than do small amounts of additional work, and consequently be overloaded when college and career become difficult.

38J

#9   A lot of people in the Academy become overwhelmed with homework, not due to the vast amount, but due to our poor time management. A lot of us are terrible procrastinators.

#11 I think the workload is fine. If this survey is about the kids who feel like it is too much, yet again, it’s time management. If it is about Academy kids taking sports, nobody asked if we wanted to take sports in the first place.

JUNIOR SURVEY COMMENTS “NO” Not enough time for homework

1J

#9         A majority of nights I end up going to bed without finishing math/Spanish assignments.

#11       I do not feel my homework load is unbearable, however I have obnoxiously long math assignments many nights.

2J

#9         No because I have instrumental lessons after school and I have to practice.

#11       The right amount of homework is given but it can be too much at times.

3J

#9         I need to better manage my time.

#11       Although I am always short on time, it is because of poor time management on my part, not the workload.

#12       In general the Academy workload is difficult, but that is a good thing. The only complaint I have is that sometimes there is a period of little or no homework, followed by a period where homework is piled on.  The load should be more balanced.

4J

#9         Sometimes the teachers all assign work on the same day.

#11       Some days it is a lot but other times its not so much.

#12       I can’t do as many things outside of school as I would like to.

5J

#9         I have extracurricular activities and a job.

#11       The amount of homework can sometimes be a lot but it is usually helpful to my learning.

#12       The homework is challenging and makes me think and learn more.  It prepares me for college.

6J

#9         Sometimes each assignment takes hours.

#11       The workload is a lot but it is for my future success.

#12       I am bettering my future.

7J

#9         Some days there is a lot of work and not as much on other days.

#11       Somewhere between about right and too high.

#12       People join the Academy because they want to be challenged. Credit should be given for more challenging courses.

8J

#9         By the time I get home, cook and eat dinner and clean up the house it is already 10 or 11 pm.  I stay up until 1 am just to get a passing grade.

#11       Walk one month in our shoes and see how it is.

#12       Some homework is pointless and half the time it doesn’t get graded.

9J

#9         I have other things that need to be done before homework so I usually go to sleep late so my homework gets done.

#11       In the Academy and AP classes, it averages 3-4 hours if you do all of the homework.  That only leaves so many hours to participate in any other  activities.

10J

#9         I have many extracurricular activities and a job.  Teachers give a lot of homework and often don’t coordinate it so many projects are due the same day.

#11       Don’t have enough time to breath.

11J

#9         Having a normal life and dealing with stress makes homework complex. At times there is too much work.

#11       Individual classes are not difficult but when combined it becomes hard to manage.  Too many tests on one day.

#12       Homework is great for the challenge.  My main goal is not to get all A’s but to prepare for college.

12J

#9         I never feel like I have enough time.  It is late after sports and I am tired.  I have a lot of homework that I do instead of sleeping.

#11       Sometimes it feels like the workload is too intense and I get stressed and do poorly.

#12       I am in the Academy to get a good education but sometimes feel the workload is too much and very stressful.

13J

#9         The homework is time consuming and intense.

#11       Because of the amount of homework given, I do not have much time left over to do things that interest me.

14J

#9         Homework takes up a large part of life.  All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

#10       I plan but never find the time to sit down and do it.

#11       An ever consuming beast, whose appetite can never be fed.

15J

#9         It varies. I am an unusually slow worker.

#11       It varies.

#12       It’s the Academy so it makes sense we get more work.  I am in the Academy because I don’t want it to beat me.  If the homework was reduced – I would just spend more time writing, drawing and reading.  Even if I had NO homework, I wouldn’t try out for a sports team.

SENIOR SURVEY COMMENTS “YES” Enough time to complete assignments

1SR

9.  I'm lazy, but I do have enough time.  Even if I did do it normally, I would most likely be stressed.

10.  Procrastination

11.  Academy has a LARGE load.  Often times multiple 20+ page packets.

12.  I feel that if I wasn't in the academy, I could have straight As, but I wouldn't be learning anything.

2SR

9.  Most Academy kids often create more or harder work for themselves than is actually assigned.

10.  If I can complete a 5 page paper in two hours and get a good grade on it which I can why spend a week on it?

11. I wish there was more work, but not more busybody work as there often is, but actual valid work and I wish ALL teachers would put forth as much effort as they expect of their students.

3SR

9.  I am very involved in my church- with choir and I work, I'm involved in a youth grant organization, but I enjoy a challenge and I feel that the education I've gotten, despite the homework load has been outstanding.

10.  You need to stay on top of things.

11. The point of the Academy is to challenge you this way.

12.  The reason I'm in the Academy is because of the priceless gift of learning-and if it means quite a bit of homework, then so be it.  The goal of this program is to prepare you for college and a successful career- and you will have to work hard to be successful.

I do not feel that the homework load is too high at all-though we groan and complain once in awhile, we do the work, and in the long run, we'll benefit more from a challenging curriculum.  We're exposed to so many more enriching opportunities- but with those opportunities comes responsibility, one that I'm fully willing to take for the incredible education I've been given here.

4SR

9.  Since I don't play sports or really work that often anymore I usually have just the right amount of time to do homework.

10. I tend to procrastinate.

11.  Depending on what classes you're taking- since I'm taking relatively easier classes this year the workload is reasonable.

12.  My homework is relatively hard but it's the reason I'm in the Academy.  I want to be challenged.

5SR

9.  Yes, I have time.  We have very few assignments that must be finished in one night.

10. Bad question.  There is very little daily homework, and it is very hard to do homework the day it is assigned.

11. I feel we could handle more work, but the amount we have now gives us a good balance.  We all have lives and they are always going to include homework.

12. Number 8 isn't a fair question.  Some weeks have more homework than others.  Some people read easier or faster or are able to do their math homework more quickly.  The number of hours you have on homework can depend extremely on the individual!  I don't see any of the academy teachers as giving excessive homework.  Our assignments usually have at least two weeks before they are due and never are we told "too bad" if we need more time.  I believe this survey is ridiculous and insulting.

6SR

9.  I have the time, it is all about choices.  Whether or not I choose to do the homework is a different story.

10.  I am a procrastinator.

11.  I feel like we are being challenged, and this is a good thing.  When I go to college, I know I will be prepared.

12.  I like the fact that I know I will do well in college.  I am prepared because of the academy.

7SR

9.  Yes, I always have enough time to do my homework.

11.  I have enough time to do everything I would wish to do.

12.  I have a reasonable workload.  My goal is not to be a star athlete, I want to do well at college and the Academy is doing a great job of preparing me for the rigors of college.  I know this by my ACT score and how well I do on my AP tests.

8SR

9.  I do have enough time, but I also have a lot of homework.  Usually about two hours worth a night.

10.  Usually I do parts of something, then do the rest when I feel like it.

11.  I get the right amount of homework for the classes I take and the stuff I learn.

12.  The Academy is a great program, and has taught me a lot of different information.  Without the Academy, I would not nearly be as prepared for college as I am now.

9SR

9.  Homework is an individual commitment to school, I make it a priority.

10.  The academy enhances your time management skills.

11.  The academy is here to challenge to me.  If they feel as if they aren't, then I don't object to more.

12.  The academy has provided me with an academic challenge I don't feel I would recieve at Guilford and didn't recieve at Eisenhower.  Limiting homework would limit my education and I'm insulted at Dr. Thompson's suggestion.

10SR

9.  I feel that I have sufficient time to complete my homework.

10.  I tend to do my homework when I have time, not necessarily as soon as it is assigned.

11.  Although the workload is high, it is integral to a program such as the academy which strives to help students reach their full potential.

12.  I feel that the workload in the academy is appropriate for a college prep program and the limiting the amount of work teachers can assign would undermine the purpose of the academy and would result in a lower-quality education.

11SR

9.  I have never simply run out of time on any homework assignment.

10.  This system lets me get work in on time.

11.  If I'm going to survive in college, I need to get used to actually doing some work.

12.  I have two friends who are freshmen at the University of Chicago.  One attended the Academy, the other Boylan.  The Academy graduate is taking four classes and enjoying herself;  the Boylan graduate is struggling with three classes.  There's a reason Academy students are assigned more work.

12SR

9.  With proper time management there is enough time for homework and extracurriculars.

10.  Time management!

11.  While we certainly work hard at school, the effort shows in our future success.  On the whole, the teachers know our limits and though they will push them, they are also open to our opinions about the work.

12.  The academy takes more time and work than other programs.  If someone has a problem with this, then they need to exit the program.  As far as I know, the program is OPTIONAL.  If you don't like it, get out!

13SR

9.  The amount of homework we get daily can be reasonably finished in that night.

10.  2 or 3 days before it's due.

11.  The workload is about right, there is never too little or too much that one cannot reasonably finish by the due date.

12.  The workload at Auburn is very reasonable and it really prepares us to get used to what we are going to experience in college.

14SR

9.  I have enough time to do homework because I don't play videogames or watch TV.

10.  The day before it's due.  I procrastinate.

11.  Any more and I would go crazy, any less and I would be bored.

15SR

9.  I don't sleep much, so I have plenty of time to complete assigned work.

10.  I have the time to start the projects, but I procrastinate.

11.  The workload gives the student enough practice to learn the material without forcing the student to devote excess amounts of time to studying.

12.  Much of the homework is challenging and exciting to complete.  It may be plentiful, but it does not hinder my ability to have a life outside of the academic aspect.

16SR

9.  Being in the Academy means you have to work.  The homework is part of the experience. Our teachers give us the work because they see value in it.  Who are we to complain when we chose to be here?

10.   If you manage your time well, there is no reason you shouldn't finish your work.

12.  I believe the work is beneficial to everyone in the Academy.

17 SR

10.  It is best to try and start ASAP.  I try to not leave it all to the last minute.

11.  Students choose themselves how much time they want to dedicate to their studies.  They can always make time.

12.  If there is enough time for TV, there is enough time for homework AND sports.  It is the student's prerogative.  There is not enough homework in the Academy.  Some of the best Academy students I know compete in varsity sports.

18SR

9.  If I manage my time, I am always able to finish my homework.

10.  I usually do most of the project the weekend before it's due, or I spread out the work.

11.  It's good to feel stressed sometimes, because it helps me manage my time even better.  The workload is not overwhelming.

12.  I am in the Academy to learn, and our homework helps with that.  We never get busywork from our Academy teachers.  If something is too overwhelming, we can usually talk to the teacher who assigned it and they are usually open to pushing back the due date.  I often enjoy at least some of the homework, especially English and history.

19SR

9.  Although time is limited especially during swim season, I get it done.

10.  A little every day.

11.  It's not perfect.  It could be a little lower.

12.  There is a lot of homework but that's the point of it.

20SR

9.  I always have enough time to do my homework, but sometimes it affects the amount of sleep I get.

10.  I usually do not procrastinate.  I only procrastinate when I have other homework due before.

11.  I wouldn't have learned as much if I haven't done all of the work.

12.  art of the Academy's success is due to the hard courses offered.  If the workload was lighter, or the classes were easier, I think the Academy wouldn't be as successful.  Compared to other schools we have harder classes and more work, but we also have higher ACT averages and more national merit finalists and semifinalists.

21SR

9.  Homework may be assigned in excess on occasion, but they are usually given well in advance.

10.  Procrastination is a bad habit...day to day things add up as well.

11.  Academy is about challenge...high courseload=high workload=high knowledge- high chance for success in life.

12.  Academy is a voluntary program...tough it can be a bit unnerving sometimes, I would say that it adds to the overall learning process.

22SR

9.  Most of the homework that we receive is not due the next day and the things that are due the next day don't take very long.

10.  I do a little bit each day so that I have free time each day but can still get it done.

11.  At certain times during the year homework does get piled on especially essays, but for the most part everything is fine.

12.  I think that the homework we receive prepares us for college so that we learn to do things well and to not procrastinate.  I also feel that despite the amount of homework we receive, we can get it done as long as we don't procrastinate. Lastly, the teachers within the Academy are aware of when sports events or other activities are going on, and they schedule their homework around it.   They are also fair with giving extensions to individuals or to whole classes who have something important going on and need more time.

23SR

9.  I like the amount of homework given.  If I wasn't looking for a challenge I wouldn't be in Academy.

10.  I do a little when ever I feel like it day by day and finish whatever I have left or two nights before its due.

11.  Kids who say it is too high can get out of the Academy.  No one's forcing me to e here.  Almost all my homework is interesting and challenging, and even if I don't like it, it prepares me.

12.  I'm here to learn and get prepared for college.  The fact that the school board is trying to decide how much I should be learning and is caving into the complaints of those without the will power to cut it in this challenging program is a huge insult to me.

24SR

9.  The homework load is not terribly heavy.

11.  The Academy allows students to participate in extracurricular activities and many students still receive good grades. If there was too much homework a student would drop the sport or activity.

12.  The only point of homework is to accelerate the learning process and to gain more knowledge.  If someone can't finish homework they aren't fit for the Academy.

25SR

9.  Because I'm able to manage my time to do homework, extra curriculars, and do chores and help out the family.

10.  I'm able to manage my time.

11.  It's not just about right, but perfect.  Everything is spread over time so that I am able to get things finished.

12.  Homework is designed for us students to understand, comprehend, and apply what we have learned in class.  Teachers do not give homework to us students without taking in to consideration what is going on in other classes.  If I do all of my homework, then I know that I am only preparing myself for the future, and the Academy is the best place to do it.
