Comments on the homework at Auburn, and how it relates to student’s goals and reasons for being in the Academy:

FRESHMAN SURVEY COMMENTS “YES” There is enough time for homework

1F.         I have three hours of unscheduled time every night. I do the easiest things first and cram them together. I usually do my homework within 30-45 minutes. It’s fine the way it is.

2F.         I have plenty of time to do my homework. I usually have an hour of homework a night and I have upwards of four hours to do my work. I’d expect two hours of homework a night. If you’re going to be in the Academy, you should expect a higher workload. The only reason for having too much work is if you procrastinate.

3F.         The amount of homework is just right. I complete daily homework the night before because I’m lazy. I want to learn more. I want more.

4F.         I have enough time. I can’t work in one sitting so I split the homework over days before it’s due. I have a 3.8 GPA and lots of time to participate in outside activities.  I’m in the academy for academics, not athletics. I see no correlation between the two and the fact that it was brought offends me. The problem is not the quantity of work; it is of time management and organization.

5F.         Most of the time we have enough time to do our homework, but sometimes we are not given enough time to complete it. I usually work on projects a little bit each day. Sometimes I wait too long to begin though. To get an OK grade, you don’t have to work as hard. But to get a good grade, you have to work really hard, and sometimes the work load is overwhelming.  Sometimes the homework load limits my participation in extracurricular activities.  Also, sometimes I feel as if I can’t do stuff with my family and friends because I have too much homework.

6F.         We have assignments ahead of time and we have plenty of time to do it.  I have to think about what things to do on projects. We get homework every night in Algebra – cut us a break please. It makes me feel like I’m very achievable.

7F.         I chose to commit myself to my school work, not to sports (which in my head is not going to get me into college). I do a majority of the project in the beginning so that it’s off my shoulders and I can put time in other things. I would love to be in cheerleading outside of school but there it too much homework.  The homework will eventually get me into a good college and then pre-med school.

8F.         I don’t do a lot of things so I have time to get my grades up. There is a lot of work. One day nobody assigns anything, the other everyone gives a load of work. Since it’s my first year, everything is difficult, but to be a trauma surgeon, I must do it.

9F.         I have sport to do. I need sleep on other days. The workload is too high, I don’t have time.

10F.     We get time in class to do most of our homework. I divide my work between days. World History we do only projects and we don’t learn anything. He gave us only four days to practice for the test.  Homework at Auburn is fine and it’ll help me achieve my goal of becoming a doctor.

11F.     I usually don’t do all of my homework. I start some of it, then the night before I do the majority of it. We get project after project plus daily assignments. I am in the academy because my mother makes me.

12F.     We usually have enough time for to do homework, but not a lot of time for fun or extracurricular activities. It’s not too much; it’s just usually all at once. It’s all due on the same day.

13F.      Usually we have lots of homework in one or two subjects, but the rest of the classes are usually good with homework. I really enjoy the academy. It challenges me. My only complaint is in World History. The projects are a bit too much for me.

14F.     There is a lot of homework, but it is doable. I start three days before and do the rest the night before. It would be nice to have more free time outside of school.  I think that the homework load should be lightened. I will go through the academy if it doesn’t get too tough.

15F.      I might have to stay up late but I can get my homework done the night before and during the school day it is due. I usually do set-up and prerequisites before the night before, but the actual project I do the night before. Some nights I have no homework and others I’m piled up with homework. Home work is often effective as a lesson reinforcer, but when there is no need for homework, we just don’t need it.

16F.     I set aside time in my schedule to do homework. I plan out what needs to get done in order. This is the academy, you should expect harder work. Having been in since first grade, I am used to the amount of work.  I believe most of it is worth it. There are some teachers who assign some ridiculous work at times, but it is all necessary in the long run. The sooner students and parents realize this, the sooner they will recognize the importance of it all.

17F.     I finish my homework in time. The workload is reasonable.

18F.     I manage my time so that on days I don’t have enough time to do homework; I do it before or after. I normally don’t start homework the day it’s assigned, but I allow enough time to finish.

19F.     The homework is understandable and doesn’t take long. I usually start planning for projects when it’s assigned and just do a little work each night. There is usually a good balance between my classes so that I don’t have homework in every class every night or too many tests in one day. The homework and work load in the Academy is just right for me because it is challenging so that I do learn, but not so hard, tedious or long so that I don’t want to do it. It also is easier because I’m not doing extracurricular activities this year so I have plenty of free time and my whole life isn’t work.

20F.     I separate work into segments that I work on daily.

21F.     I have all the time I need to do my homework. I think about projects when they are assigned and do a little everyday or whenever I can, but I get them done on time. I don’t think it’s too much. I can do it and it’s not like it’s not enough.

22F.     I have enough time to do homework. Some assignments I do the day they’re due because I procrastinate. Some of the assignments are pointless, but overall I’m pretty happy.

23F.     I manage my time between sports and school and church. I do assignments gradually.

24F.     I organize my time and if busy or piled with homework, I work around by canceling something or working twice as hard. The work is challenging, but that’s what you’re in it for. Homework in Auburn challenges and tests your limits which build your effort which helps you reach your goals.

25F.     I spend a short amount of time on homework and still can do sports. I do a little work until about a week before it is due and then work hard on it. I have time to do stuff and complete my homework. It is usually good except for Social Studies, where it is pointless.

26F.     I have enough time to do homework. Most of the time I start early n projects. The homework is pretty hard, and lots of it, but it’s bearable.

27F.     I try to dedicate time to everything but I try to put forth more time for homework and studying than other activities. Many academy students are in activities. More homework may be hazardous. Less homework could lead to laziness. I love the academy; the work load is about right for students our age.

28F.     I have enough time to do homework, but not enough to do what I want. I don’t load myself, I spread it out. Being in the academy it’s understandable because the students want to be challenged but it should balance with all the other things they want to do.

29F.     I seem to do my best work the night before. It all has to with how you manage your time. Being in the academy does seem hard, and is supposed to be harder than regular and I believe they feel since we are in the academy we get more work and harder work. I don’t mind it. To me it all has to do with how you manage your time.

30F.     I finish my homework and have plenty of time to do whatever. I procrastinate … usually do it the week it’s due. Workload is good and sometimes it gets to be a lot, but oh well. Fun thing to do and good teachers make for easier/less homework. As long as the teacher explains the assignment well, it should not take long.

31F.     Although my schedule is pretty hectic, I do have time to balance my schoolwork and everything else I do. Each day I do a little bit. The workload is not too high or low. I’m able to balance school and other extracurricular activities pretty well.

32F.     The assignments they give us are usually long-term. I am a procrastinator.

33F.     I make use of my time and always put homework first. I usually get a lot of research done and some organization and then put it all together the night before. I only am overwhelmed when I procrastinate on long term assignments.

34F.     If I focus, everything can get done. Our workload is not too much, enough to learn what we need. Most homework is a fair amount, only gets too much when I procrastinate on long-term assignments.

35F.     If you don’t procrastinate is it possible to do all of your homework. I do small parts once in awhile but I finish most of the project just before it’s due.  The homework is okay but my electives could have more work so I could learn more there.

36F.     Everyone is personally busy, but school is my top priority over sports or clubs. I never start a long-term project early because I want to think before I start the actual project. Sometimes the workload is too much, but I like it better than never having any challenges or homework. I think that homework and school should be put above sports or extracurricular activities. Sports are important but I put school way above them. I’m the in academy for the academic challenge and not for the extra sports.

37F.     I have plenty of time to do homework because it is all about time management. I do a little everyday, so I don’t have to pull an all-nighter. The academy to me means that it makes me think more and it challenges me, but I expect it to be harder than regular Ed. If people lower the homework load they are lowering the expectations of the students and it will be like regular Ed. The academy is challenging and if some cannot handle the challenge they do not belong in the academy program. School is more important than socializing. All people have to do it manage their time well.

38F.     I use good time-management skills. There is enough homework to learn the material but not too much so that it cannot be done. I work on projects a little bit each day. If I did not have the work ethic to do homework, then I would not be in the Academy. The purpose for being in the Academy is for the challenge and for higher knowledge at a faster pace. If one does not feel they can do so, then they do not fit the characteristics of a gifted student.

39F.     I have enough time, but don’t have much time after sports and homework to do anything else. I tend to procrastinate. The workload is about right, but the amount of time we have to do it is not enough.

40F.     I usually finish my homework on time. I feel the homework is about right; maybe a little less and if the teachers could assign on different days and not load it all on the same day. I want to do academically well that is why I am in the Academy. I feel right now the way we are going is good, but maybe a little less work.

41F.     It’s all about time management and determination. The work only gets difficult when you don’t mange your time. I like the academy, like how it challenges me but doesn’t overflow.

42F.     I get all my homework done at night and still have a couple of hours of free time. I work on projects a little day by day. I have plenty of time to do what I want. I am happy with the Academy.

43F.     I have enough time, but it eats up free time. I only have about an hour of free time each day. I guess it could be a little lighter, but it’s pretty good. OK.

44F.     I have enough time because I can manage my time. A little a day and then a final overview the last night. They could give more homework in all classes.

45F.     I have time to do my homework because I’m not that busy during the week. It’s high school and we need to practice our education.

46F.     I have enough time to work and still have free time. The workload is about right. I think you should leave regulation at the academy to those who teach it.

47F.     I do a lot on weekends and a little as I have time. It’s not that overwhelming but sometimes can be very high. World History – too high – for example: 4 days to prepare for test of comparing Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Taoism, Christianity, comparing belief systems.

48F.     I have enough time to do homework, but it takes planning and management which I don’t always do. I start projects before they’re due, but I don’t do them early. I feel I get the proper amount of homework most nights, but sometimes I feel that the workload does get excessive. I feel that I’m learning a lot of information that will be useful later on in college or in career.

49F.     I generally work 3-4 hrs. a night.  I do better the night before because I can’t focus for a long period of time. Compared to middle school there is more work so that makes it just right. I wanted to be ready for college and I feel prepared being in the Academy.

50F.     Even after sports there is enough time for homework. There may be some late nights, but that comes with the academy. Although the workload could be a little lower, there is enough time if you manage it right. Sometimes the workload seems overwhelming. Knowing that it does comes with being the academy. There is still some times where you wish there was less. It is all working to help later in life.

51F.     I usually have enough time to finish my homework, however sometimes it is hard to finish everything while doing my best. I work on projects a little each day. I believe I am challenged but not overloaded with homework. The homework at Auburn is challenging, but will be good for me in the long run when I go on to college. Hopefully, college will not be too overwhelming. I hope to be prepared.

52F.     I do have enough time to do my homework but I usually stay up late to finish all of it. I usually start thinking about the project the day it is assigned, but how much I work on it daily depends on the homework for that day. If one does not procrastinate too much, one can finish the assignments and projects. The homework at Auburn is challenging and I am in the Academy to be challenged and learn. At this point after being in the Academy for 9 years it would be so easy to do regular education.

53F.     We generally get about 3-4 hours a night and I get it done in a timely manner. I try to pace myself when doing projects. I do my daily homework when I get home. Some nights there is little homework, and some nights there is a lot; it balances out. Sometimes I feel that the homework is a lot, but when I look back, it really wasn’t.

54F.     I do have enough time for homework because I try to stay organized. I try to spend a little time on it every day. I usually have enough time, but sometimes I get overloaded with homework. I think that the long term projects should have more specific direction.

55F.     Sometimes I have time, other days I don’t. Sometimes we have too much, other times not. The daily homework assignments at Auburn have an even amount. Sometimes it’s just enough for the day.

56F.     The teachers give us a reasonable time to do our homework. I procrastinate but feel I work better under pressure. If you are in the Academy, the message that you’re sending is that you want to be challenged. If you believe that the Academy is too difficult for you then switch to regular. The Academy is for people who are gifted and want a challenge.

57F.     At times it gets stressful, but overall I believe that this large amount of homework is necessary in order for the student to practice and apply what is being taught in class.

58F.     There is mostly enough time for homework, and I usually do a certain amount each night, but some nights there is more than others. I think the workload is okay.

59F.     I try to work daily. I was expecting high school to be harder than middle school so it is okay. I don’t spend that much time on sports; I just play for fun and exercise. Academics is good, a higher priority, homework comes first, the work load is just right. I’m in the Academy so I can get a head start in college, so I’m learning and not bored.

60F.     The work load is heavy, but the teachers give us a reasonable amount of time to complete it and still eat, sleep and participate in extra-curricular activities. I plan out and use my time well, especially on large assignments. We learn without being extremely stressed from the work load. The Academy is a great way to learn about what is important. Sports are not an issue because people can be both athletically inclined and academically inclined, but it depends on how people work together. Academics come first in future life. Sports are fun, but will most likely not help people succeed in later life after they graduate.

61F.     I balance my schedule and make time to do homework each night. I work on projects a little bit at a time. We have a good amount of homework; more than regular but it’s supposed to be. Homework at Auburn isn’t just busy work but helps practicing for tests and preparing for next year and or college.

62F.     It just depends how I manage my time. I do my homework in daily increments because it is easier to do so. The homework is just the right amount because we just need to manage our time.

63F.     I have plenty of time.  I just like to procrastinate.

64F.     There is enough time whether I want to do it or not. I take it a day at a time finishing what’s most important first. It keeps me busy, but I still have free time for myself. The homework keeps my mind stimulated. Being in the Academy means a better education, better college, and better jobs. It’s setting up my future.

65F.     I finish my homework on time though I’m not motivated to start early. The workload can get too much, but normally it is fine.

66F.     I manage my time so I have enough time for homework. I don’t start immediately, but I finish projects over time and homework at home. We have enough work to do. It can get too high sometimes, when multiple teachers assign multiple projects at the same time.

67F.     I usually finish my homework before 11:00. Sometimes I stay up really late to finish projects though. I don’t really feel like it’s too much, but sometimes it does.

68F.     I find time every night to do my homework after sports. One problem, Auburn teachers assign HUGE projects. Those are a bit too much to handle. We join the academy for a challenge. That is what we are getting.

69F.     My homework is usually done around dinnertime. My daily homework is done the next day. My long-term assignments need prioritizing. I feel challenged. I went to the academy because I wanted to learn. I am learning.

70F.     There is enough time although I would like a little more time to do other things. I procrastinate projects because it helps me think. In Biology the homework sometimes has to be done from the internet. Not everyone has access to that.

71F.     I manage my time well. I work on homework a bit at a time. I have enough time to do my homework.

72F.     I manage my time and will some times not attend extracurricular activities. The workload is overload at certain times, other times it is ok.

73F.     I usually have enough time to do my homework, but there are times when things pile up. I find some of the work to be too hard. There are some assignments that I think should be given more time to turn in. Also, aside from homework, I think we need to work on vocabulary, because some things are hard to understand.

74F.     I feel that I have enough time to do my homework now because I’m no longer playing volleyball and have become more organized. I work a little each night and usually have a project done about a week in advance. Our workload is just right. I feel that the Academy homework should be hard not more of it. Though this doesn’t really relate to why I’m wanted to be in the Academy.

75F.     Teachers give us enough time. I get my thoughts and plans together when I receive the project. I feel the homework is just right, and good for me.  The “hard” homework is essential to higher learning. If you can’t handle it GET OUT.

FRESHMAN SURVEY COMMENTS “NO” Not enough time for homework

1FN.  SOMETIMES I don’t have enough time, it varies.  It also depends on the kind of homework.  If it is a HUGE project, then daily increments.  It’s high school so we should expect a lot of homework.  Sometimes it’s too much.  “Sometimes the projects are completely off the curriculum.

2FN.  Because I have other work in classes so I don’t have enough time and brain power to do the rest of it.  I just don’t have time to do it.  It’s almost right (the workload) because some days it’s a lot and some days it’s just right.

3FN.  I need more time to do my everyday homework.  When I don’t have time to do it, I do it the day it’s due, but I try to do it as soon as possible.  The workload is about right, but could have more time to do it.

4FNIt really varies by night.  Generally I start my hw at about 7 after I eat dinner and am done with all activities.  I usually think about the project for a day or two and then I begin working on parts.  I have about 2-3 hrs per night.  It’s challenging but not overpowering.  I love to be challenged and that’s what I’m here for.  I think the homework reflects that in the difficulty and length.

5FN.  I don’t have time because there is a lot of homework and I have sport/clubs/outside of school activities.  For projects, especially world history, it takes a while to find and research information I need.  There is a lot of hoework but I just need to find the time which I usually do.  The homework assigned takes a lot of work, especially projects, but once I accomplish it, I feel proud of putting all my effort into it.

6FN.  So many extracurricular activities I don’t have that much time for homework.  I start a few days after it is assigned and every couple of days work on it.  The workload is not too much, but it’s not too little.  US History is a little challenging homework wise because you need at least 2 hours to do homework.  I just need to find time in my busy schedule.  It takes a lot of effort to complete homework, but once I finish it I feel relieved that I finished.

7FN.  I wait an hour before starting and bowling is starting up, so that is going to narrow my homework time.  I have things that are going on that are usually due the next day, if I have time for the long terms, then great!  Workload is enough to keep me busy, but have time to still goof off and have a life.  Homework keeps my mind stimulated, and if I drop out now, I’m going to be bored.  It will also benefit my mind and future.]

8FN.  Sometimes I get home and then start my hw and then get so tired then go to bed and then finish it in the morning.  I’m busy and procrastinate and sometimes I don’t do it the night before.  Workload is about right because we have hw but it’s sometimes hard to balance.

9FN.  I have sport to do.  I need sleep on other days.  Workload is too high because I don’t have time.

10FN.   Some teachers give too much homework the same night.  It’s like different subjects give a lot of homework on one night.  I have to have a day or two to organize thoughts and ideas before I start on a long term project.  The workload is not too much all the time and it’s not too little.  At times it can be too high, but not a lot.  The only class I have hw problems with is algebra because it’s every night a new subject.  I think one subject should be taught at least two days and hw should be every other day.

11FN.   With football they hold us late, plus it takes me 30 minutes to get home.  So I could be home by 7 and get done by 11 because I have to eat.  So I would always go with minimum amounts of sleep.  I am getting better at not procrastinating, but when we have long projects, there is less daily homework.  If I procrastinate, I have more free time.  Academy kids are in school to learn and we have homework we do at home, regular kids can carry it in their pocket and get it done in class.  I like the amount of homework because the harder high school is, the easier college is.

12FN.   Some projects I would like to have more time to create them.  It is exhausting having to complete all that work as soon as possible.  I like being in the Academy but when I have a lot of hw my desire to be in the academy goes to a lower level.

13FN.   Not enough time because I am busy with other things.  I like to get homework done, however I do procrastinate.  There is too much work.  I am in the Academy for college purposes.

14FN.   There is too much homework, because I have a life.

15FN.   I have had mono so I sleep most of the day.   I’m a procrastinator.  I think the workload is too high because they expect us to do between 15-20 hours a week, plus elective hw.  I’m in the Academy so I can learn things I don’t know.

16FN.   Because I do so much other stuff that I’m been committed to as well, so I have to do hw on the bus alone.  I do a little everyday and then pull it all together the weekend before a long term project is due.  I think the teachers give projects and then give us other homework we have to do that takes time away from the project.  The teachers should talk about when they give bigger assignments so they’re not always at the same time as each other.

17FN.   Homework is too much, not a lot of class time, and very time consuming.  I get done as soon as possible because I know I will have lots tomorrow.  I get home, do hw, eat dinner, do hw, to bed.  World History is too much.

18FN.   Usually I am flooded with my family’s own schedule and mine which overlap a lot.  If it s like a 7day assignment I usually begin 4 days before.  There is too much homework.

19FN.   When they assign an essay they only give us a couple of days.  When a long term project is assigned, I’ll wait one day then start it and tack a break for 2 days then finish it.  There’s so much homework and you have other things to do like sports.  I want to have a 4.0, but I think I need to work harder so I can get a scholarship for college.

20FN.   I don’t have enough time to do homework because of the amount of work and the amount of time it takes me to do it.  I usually have to do my home work at the last minute because I am working on one of my other numerous assignments.  I constantly have too much work,  I have very little free time to relax.  I am always stressed about if I will get everything done in time to get a few hours of sleep.  I wanted to be in the Academy for a challenge but not for the nonstop stressing that I get now.  I have considered leaving because of this.  It seems like normal classes with a lot more homework.

21FN.   The amount of homework has overwhelmed me so much my mind literally refuses to work on the homework.  I sometimes do my homework in increments, but like I said before, sometimes I don’t work.  They are expecting us to be able to fit it into our schedules even though most of us can’t.  This is my first year in the Academy and it was difficult the first day.  The goal of entering a career in game design is literally impossible because of the inability to find a teacher for the IT / A+ class.

22FN.   There are many things that are going on in my life so by the time I get my homework done at around one in the morning, I am exhausted.  I try to work on projects and get them done before they are due, but sometimes it doesn’t work out that way.  I think that there is too much homework seeing as I never had a problem getting it done before (new to the program).  I believe that being in the Academy is very challenging.  In someways this is a good thing.  In other ways (homework), it is much too complicated.

23FN.   After school I have bball practice til 6:00, home at 6:30, rest til 7:30, eat at 8:00, play video games til 9:30, do homework til 11:00, go to sleep.  I don’t like the pressure of doing my homework at the last minute.  I would like to have less homework and more in class work (checked feels the workload is about right).  The homework is easy, we just shouldn’t have so much of it, not that I have much.

SOPHMORE SURVEY COMMENTS “YES” There is enough time for homework

1S.       If I stay on task and work diligently once I begin working on my homework I am able to

finish in general at a reasonable time. I work on long term projects on nights when it is

reasonable to do so. I’m in the Academy because I expect to be challenged and the work-

load I receive is appropriate for the program

2S.       If I like the assignment I start working in daily increments and if I don’t the night

            before.

3S.       Occasionally, I make the deliberate decision to blow off an assignment, but when

I actually do it I have plenty of time. For assignments I know I’ll have, I often do them

before they are assigned. I have plenty of time to complete my homework, but I need to

spend enough time on it that I can confidently set aside a block of time a night. My

college choice is the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. I honestly feel as though

the Academy is doing an excellent job of preparing me for the overscheduled lifestyle

I know I will be facing when I get there. I don’t believe any other program could benefit

            me more.

4S.       I do procrastinate a bit, but I definitely give myself more than enough time to finish

long term projects. The workload is fine, I hardly ever feel any amount of time

constraint that can’t be eliminated with a measure of time organization. The homework

isn’t a problem and it shouldn’t be thought of as such. Though it’s undeniably elevated,

it’s plain overreaction to lessen it. It defeats the purpose of readying us for college and

beyond and reducing that would be in direct opposition to the cause.

5S.       Yes, I have enough time to do my homework because when I get home I spend about

an hour doing homework but all other work is usually reading and/or writing which

is spread out over the course of the week. Long term assignments require thought and

planning so immediate brainstorming is necessary. The workload is the expected amount

for a class you expect to learn in. To only apply yourself in the classroom and not

outside the classroom, people tend not to learn as much (memory studies). When you

choose to be in the Academy, you are forewarned that it is an accelerated college prep

program. So, when you are in the program you cannot complain because it is a choice.

Most of the Academy students are in A.P. classes, foreign language, some arts/CAPA

courses and/or 1-3 sports a year for the school, excluding outside activities.

6S.       I manage my time and dominate life on the diamond/court. I don’t wait til the last

minute. If you don’t do something to help our GPA’s, you are worthless. There is

zero incentive to be in the Academy and furthermore why is it at Auburn, put us in

a nice school and get us weighted grades.

7S.       We don’t get an overload of homework as sometimes rumored.

8S.       I have enough time to do my homework and I also have free time with which I may do

what I choose. The amount of homework is not necessarily more, it is simply more

challenging and takes more time to do. I enjoy the Academy because I know I will be

extremely well prepared for college and the working life after.

9S.       I know how to do homework along with other things. I’m “upset” that I don’t have

            weighted grades.

10S.     I have enough time, the issue is actually doing the homework. I procrastinate. The

Academy has given me a great advantage towards college over my peers. I feel that

the Academy has provided me with the skills I need to do well in life. Contrary to some

beliefs, I have been able to maintain a GPA that is near my goal and be on the swimming

            and bowling team.

11S.     We take harder classes and we can still be ranked as high as people who take simpler

classes. We should be rewarded for the work that we do.

12S      I stay up late sometimes if I am involved in other things, but I get it done. I procrastinate

sometimes. The gifted students deserve better {descriptive words} representatives than

our school board. Reward us for working hard, give us a good school and weighted

            grades.

13S.     If you want to be involved in other things, learn to manage your time well. I

procrastinate. The workload is enough to challenge kid’s minds. I want to get a higher

education than the other schools offer. Auburn offers the best educational preparation

            for college.

14S.     I have enough time because I work on it when I am give time at school and after

or before my other activities. With long term projects, I do procrastinate but I begin

working on it before the night before. I chose this program to challenge me and it does.

It doesn’t involve more work than I expected. My reasons for being in the Academy

are because I want to be challenged. I chose to be in this program, I plan to stay all

through high school because of the way it prepares me for college. Sports add to my

school experience. Art classes were another choice along with other activities I am in.

I knew what I was getting into. The only reason that my grades may be affected were

because I don’t do my work to the fullest. This was my choice even if sports at Auburn

do suck, some are good. and I hope our sports skills are not taken into account. Some of

my sports, such as volleyball, had a bad coach. I like the Academy program and

hope/plan to stay in and keep my grades up.

15S.     I never feel I have been assigned too much homework for a night, except on rare

occasions. I try to get a jump on long term projects. I feel I am learning a lot and that the

homework is worth it. I realize the Academy is worth all the trouble.

16S.     I have plenty of time to both complete my homework and play organized sports.

17S.     Well, it’s not impossible to do it all but it is very hard. I begin long term projects the

night before; well, this would be called….procrastination. I’m very interested in a

            challenging life. Academy/CAPA rocks!

18S.     I manage my time very well. I am fine with the workload. The Academy program is

a magnificent way to learn. I wouldn’t want to receive my education any other way.

I am a very well rounded person!

19S.     I manage my time well. I do my homework in increments. I want weighted grades,

            now!

20S.     Well, there is enough time available to do my homework as long as I choose to do little

else. Also, I switched the days that I work to weekends so I have time for homework

during the week. I procrastinate. We are in the Academy, so, of course we will have a lot

of homework. If you want less, drop out; if you can’t drop out—deal with it. It’s not

forever. I no longer wish to be a part of the Academy…it is my parents’ choice to keep

me in. I am tired of doing only homework all the time and not getting good grades.

21S.     I get as much as possible done at school. We need weighted grades!

22S.     I have enough time for my homework. I don’t stress out and do it right when it is due.

I work on it every other day little by little and it works out. The homework is what sets

the Academy apart from regular. That is what I want.

23S.     Homework is my priority, then any extracurricular activities I’m involved with. It is

necessary  to begin your homework or projects as soon as they are assigned to complete

the assignment. Though the workload my seem too high for some people; at the Academy

I understand that some extreme workloads are necessary. I never reach a point where I

fell I am going to collapse due to the workload. I feel that such a high workload is

necessary to reach my goal of college preparation. I fell I’m learning a lot in the

Academy and in the future, I will be grateful for this opportunity.

24S.     I can manage my time properly. We need less, thanks for wasting our time without

weighted grades. We really need to get weighted grades back. And the gifed program

should be moved to a better school with CLEAN AND OPEN bathrooms that will

not cause us to burst our internal organs!

25S.     I am up very late every night doing homework but that is because I am easily distracted

and I procrastinate. I feel the workload is about right. I am doing all of my homework

and staying busy, I hardly ever watch TV any more and I get enough sleep because I

need it for sports. When I was not in the Academy, only the year before last, I had

straight A’s and no homework. I was bored. The only thing I ever did was sports and that

was one season a year. When I started the Academy, I was actually working and actually

learning. I am very proud of the majority of B’s that are now on my report card and I am

absolutely disgusted by the fact that others are jealous of the work that I do and say it is

too much. It only seems like it is too much because the other people are lazy. They do not

do any work and only learn a general and stereotypical idea of education. I work so hard

and do so much of the work because I love to learn, I do not like being bored with regular

education. I want to actually succeed in life. I am also on the varsity swim team and the

softball team, I am in Key Club and Speech and Debate Club and I play violin. I love all

the things that I do, but the only important thing is my education. With education I

get a real knowledge and perspective on all things. I amount of work I do is all I have to

            show for it.

26S.     Yes, I plan my time, try not to procrastinate, and there is enough time if you use it well.

The workload is about right, preparing me for college. I appreciate the workload because             I will be prepared for college unlike other graduates from other high schools. I came to

Auburn for the Academy. If I wished to be unprepared, I would have gone to Guilford.

27S.     I manage my time around my extra-curriculars. However, there are days that I don’t

have time. I have to do my homework when I have time, so my time to do my homework

can change time to time. I think the question that sparked this survey is completely

stupid. Why do you take our athletic ability more importantly that our future? We have

had a great debate over weighted grades but our “well roundedness” gets more attention?

Yes, the Academy is demanding, but if we didn’t want to do it, we would drop out. The

fact the Academy prepares us for college is why we’re still in it. We get NO recognition

in ranks and grades but we remain in this challenging program. It’s frustrating to be an

Academy student when we are questioned on our athletic ability, which seems to promote

the fact you don’t take us seriously. I have done sports since the 4th grade. Seven years

and my GPA NON-WEIGHTED IN THE ASPECT OF OUR DEMANDING
HOMEWORK LOAD, has never dropped below a 3.167. We are student a
